What to Wear to an Engagement Party

Whether you are a guest or the bride-to-be, here is how to dress for an engagement party, from garden lunches to evening celebrations.

An engagement party is usually a little less formal than a wedding, but it is still a special occasion. What you wear depends on the venue, the time of day and the traditions of the couple. Here is how to get it right.

Check the dress code

Start with the invitation. "Cocktail" or "semi-formal" usually means a dress that hits the knee or below, in a nice fabric. "Casual" or "garden party" allows a pretty sundress or a two-piece set. If the party is at a hotel or a restaurant in the evening, dress up. When in doubt, a midi dress is the safest choice: elegant but never overdressed.

Colours to choose (and avoid)

As a guest, steer clear of all-white, ivory and cream, which are traditionally reserved for the bride-to-be. Colours that always work include:

  • Soft pastels such as blush, sage, powder blue and lilac for daytime.
  • Jewel tones such as emerald, sapphire and burgundy for evening.
  • Florals and prints for garden and summer parties.
  • Black for a formal evening, styled with colourful or gold accessories.

Daytime vs evening

For a daytime party, choose light, breathable fabrics like chiffon, crepe or cotton, with block heels or wedges if the event is on grass. For evening, satin, lace and subtle sequins feel more festive; add heels, statement earrings and a clutch.

For the bride-to-be

This is your moment, so wear something you feel wonderful in. White and ivory are classic choices, from a fitted satin midi to a lace mini or a flowing maxi. Some brides choose a bold colour, a soft metallic or a pastel instead. If you have more than one event, consider a lighter look for daytime and something more glamorous for the evening.

Cultural engagement celebrations

In many Middle-Eastern and South-Asian families, an engagement is a large, formal celebration with music, dancing and many guests. The bride often wears a richly embellished gown or a traditional outfit, and guests dress up accordingly: think floor-length dresses, rich colours, sparkle and statement jewellery. If you are invited to an event outside your own traditions, it is perfectly fine to ask the hosts or another guest what is expected.

Modest options

For a covered look, choose a long-sleeve midi or maxi with a high neckline, or layer a fitted top under a sleeveless dress. Flowing A-line silhouettes in chiffon or crepe are elegant and comfortable for a long evening. Browse our modest dresses or read our guide to modest evening dresses for more ideas.
