The length of a dress changes everything: how formal it feels, how it moves and how it flatters your figure. Here is a simple guide to choosing between mini, midi and maxi.
Maxi dresses: for the big occasions
A maxi dress reaches the ankle or the floor. It is the right choice for black-tie events, galas, proms and evening weddings, and it is also the easiest length to wear modestly. Tall women can wear almost any maxi; if you are petite, choose a fitted or column shape, a high waist or a slit to keep the line long, and wear heels.
Midi dresses: the most versatile length
A midi dress ends between the knee and the ankle. It works for cocktail parties, daytime weddings, christenings and dinners, and can be dressed up or down with shoes and jewellery. A hem that falls just below the knee or at mid-calf is flattering on most heights; if you are petite, avoid a hem that cuts across the widest part of the calf.
Mini dresses: for parties and nights out
A mini dress ends above the knee. It is playful and easy to move in, ideal for birthdays, cocktail bars, New Year's Eve and after-parties. Balance a short hemline with a higher neckline or long sleeves for an elegant look.
Quick guide by occasion
- Black tie and galas: maxi.
- Prom: maxi, or a mini for the after-party.
- Evening wedding: maxi or an elegant midi.
- Daytime wedding: midi.
- Cocktail party: midi or mini.
- Birthday or night out: mini or a two-piece set.
- Religious ceremony: midi or maxi with covered shoulders, or a modest dress.
Do not forget the shoes
Try the dress with the shoes you will wear. Heels can turn an ankle-length dress into a floor-length look, and flats make a maxi more relaxed. Check the measurements in the size guide on each dress before you order, and see our tips on how to measure yourself.
